For the dance, the combined costume party and Valentine's Ball, Steve toned back his outfit to be a more formal, Victorian inspired costume that didn't have quite so elaborate Steampunk trappings. He still had a few gears here and there, and a shiny pistol at his hip. He had a leather pouch on his belt that held miscellany, and he had goggles. But he didn't have glass, or tubes, or a Captain's coat. He was more gentleman than military, and he hoped that he would be able to sit comfortably, since that was an impossibility when he had his apparatus.

As he left his hotel room to walk the short distance to knock on Ashlyn's door he sent a text to Luke. They'd gather him or meet him at the Ball, but Steve didn't know how much time Luke needed after they'd locked the vendor's room for the night.

"Ashlyn, it's me," he called, tapping his knuckles at her door. "Are you ready?"

In a moment her door opened a crack and she peered out at him. "All set. I need a favor, though."

Steve nodded. "Sure. Anything."

"You hold the door. I need to back up; you can come in and hold it wide open for me. I can't actually get the door open and get out at the same time." She looked more than a little chagrined. "Poor planning, I guess."

"What on earth are you wearing?"

She rolled her eyes. "Hold the door and come on in." She stepped back, and Steve moved forward, letting himself in as she retreated farther into the room.

"Holy mother of God." Steve stared. He's seen the dress before, more than once. Kaylee's dress from the episode "Shindig" of Firefly was a popular costume on the con circuit, and he'd seen amazing photos of versions from the bigger conventions that were amazing. But Ashlyn's dress was detailed and likely the most accurate one he'd seen.

The bodice had many, many buttons, the sleeves were puffed and trimmed with three inches of lace, and the neckline was high. The gathers up and down the front of the bodice looked intricate and difficult, and he was reasonably sure Ashlyn was wearing a corset underneath it all. The skirt was magnificent, a complete show stopping scene stealer. The hoops held it out so wide that there was only one space in the room where Ashlyn could stand and not be bumping into things.

He was unsure if she'd fit in the elevator.

The three tiers of organza ruffles -- three rows of peach, three rows of pink and another three rows of darker pink -- spread to a breadth of at least four and a half feet.

"Did you make that?" he asked, awed.

"Do I look like I sew?" She arched an eyebrow at him. "I work. I game. I watch some TV. I have contacts, though, and know some crazy talented people. I'm a bit worried about making it down to the room."

"We'll squish you into the elevator." Steve grinned at her. "I'd offer you my arm, but I can't get near you.
